第三部分：阅读理解（共 20 小题；每小题 2 分，满分 40 分） 阅读下列短文，从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 项中，选出最佳选项。 A When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker （股票经纪人） . I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why doesn’t he send me check already two week late.” And then, in perfect English I said, “I’m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.” Then she talked more loudly, “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss. ”And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuses. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.” The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world. [ ]56. Why was the author’s mother poorly served? A. She was unable to speak good English. B. She was often misunderstood.
C. She was not clearly heard. D. She was not very polite. [ ]57. From Paragraph 2, we know that the author was _________. A. good at pretending B. rude to the stockbroker C. Ready to help her mother D. unwilling to phone for her mother [ ]58. After the author made the phone call, _______. A. they forgave the stockbroker B. they failed to get the check C. they went to New York immediately D. they spoke to their boss at once [ ]59. What does the author think of her mother’s English now? A. It confuses her. B. It embarrasses her. C. It helps her understand the world. D. It helps her tolerate rude people. [ ]60. We can infer from the passage that Chinese English ________. A. is clear and natural to non-native speakers B. is vivid and direct to non-native speakers C. has a very bad reputation in America D. may bring inconvenience in America
B The poverty line is the minimum income that people need for an acceptable standard of living. People with incomes below the poverty line are considered poor. Economists study the causes of poverty in order to find solutions to the problem. As the general standard of living in the country rises, the poverty line does, too. Therefore, even with today’s relatively high standard of living, about 10 percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line. However, if these people had stable jobs, they could have an
acceptable standard of living. Economists suggest several reasons why poor people do not have jobs. For one thing, more than half of the poor people in the United States are not qualified to work. Over 40 percent of the poor people are children. By law, children less than 16 years old cannot work in many industries. A large number of poor people are old. Many companies do not hire people over 65 years old the normal retirement age. Some poor adults do not look for jobs for a variety of personal reasons: they are sick, they do not have any motivation, they have family problems, or they do not believe that they can find a job. Other poor people look for a job but cannot find one. Many poor adults never went to high school. Therefore, when they look for jobs, they have few skills that they can offer. At the present time, the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the following ways. First, if the national economy grows, businesses and industries hire more workers. Some of the poor who are qualified to look for jobs may find employment. Then they will no longer be below the poverty line. Second, if society invests in the poor, the poor will become more productive. If the government spends money on social programs, education, and training for poor people, the poor will have the skills to offer. Then it is more likely that they can find jobs. Finally, if the government distributes society’s income differently, it raises some poor people above the poverty line. The government collects taxes from the non-poor and gives money to the poor. These payments to the poor are called welfare. Since 1975 over 18 million people in the United States have received welfare per year. Some economists are looking for better solutions to the poverty problem. However, at the present time, many people depend on welfare for a minimally acceptable standard of living. [ ]61. The author’s main purpose to write this article is _______. A. to define （下定义）what the poverty line is B. to explain why some people live the poverty line C. to find solutions to the problem of poverty D. to show sympathy for those poor people
]62. Which of the following is NOT true? A. Ten percent of the Americans live a poor life. B. Poor people are those who live below the poverty line. C. The poverty line rises as the general standard of living rises. D. The poverty line tends to be at the same level.
]63. More than 40 percent of the poor people are children. This is mainly because _______. A. they do not have enough motivation B. they are so young that they are deprived of chances to work C. they fail to get enough education D. they are very poor in health
]64. Most of the American poor people are not qualified for employment because
________. A. they do not have any motivation to work B. they are not very self-confident C. they are too young or too old to work D. they have physical and family problems [ ]65. We may conclude from the passage that _______. A. better solutions to the poverty problem are not yet found B. welfare will enable people to be rich C. poor people will go out of the poverty line if they have chances to do business D. employment is the best solution to the poverty problem

D With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species. That’s a move similar to what a Texas A&M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”. Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos, semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future. It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years. This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead
female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete. “The nuclear transfer（核子移植）of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available capable of being used） （ panda eggs could be a major problem, ”Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy（having a baby）. It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort, ”adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A&M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog. “They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed. ” [ ]71. The aim of “Noah’s Ark”project is to _______. A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas B. save endangered animals from dying out C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another [ ]72. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the
lack of ________. A. available panda eggs B. host animals C. qualified researchers D. enough money [ ]73. In the fifth paragraph, the word “groundbreaking” means ________. A. making new discoveries B. increasing in number C. gathering in a group D. having a particular quality [ ]74. The best title for the passage may be ______.
A. China’s Success in Pandas Cloning B. The First Cloned Panda in the World C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas D. China – the Native Place of Pandas Forever [ ]75. From the passage we know that _______. A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog B. scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit C. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches D. about two thousand of species will probably die out in a century
第Ⅱ卷（共 35 分） 第四部分：书面表达（共两节，满分 35 分） 第一节：阅读表达（共 5 小题，每小题 2 分，满分 10 分） As any recent high school graduate can attest（证实）the first question everyone asks when you graduate from high school is, “_________?”They ask you, knowing that this decision is the first step of the rest of your life. But when I graduated from high school in 2009, I started to hate this question. “I am going to Burlington County College” （my local community college）, which seemed to be magic phrase that would take the smile off their faces. Judging by these reactions, I knew that people had a lot of misconceptions about community colleges. I could practically see the questions forming on their lips. Aren’t community colleges only for people who can’t get into a four-year school? Not necessarily. Although it is true that community colleges don’t require a minimum GPA（Grade Point Average）or SAT （Scholastic Assessment Test）score to attend, it is a cost-effective and convenient way to earn a degree. In high school, I always got As and Bs, and scored well on the SATs. Had I wanted to attend a four-year college right out of high school, my application probably would have been competitive. But when it came time to apply to colleges, I was at a loss with all the options and had a bit of a quarter-life crisis. Even after taking the SATs, researching schools, and visiting countless colleges, I just couldn’t bring myself to apply to anywhere. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to major in and couldn’t justify spending thousands of dollars at a four-year school until I had a plan and knew what I wanted to do. My parents agreed with my
decision to attend Burlington County College, and I often say it is the best decision I’ve ever made. I soon learned that a community college, just like any other college, was what you made of it. 76. Fill in the blank in the first paragraph with the appropriate words.（no more than 6 words） The first question everyone asks when graduating from high school is: “______________________________________________?” 77.
