In the first place, television is not only a convenient source of entertainment, but also a comparatively cheap one. With a TV set in the family people don’t have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre, the cinema, or the opera. All they have to do is to push a button or turn a knob, and they can see plays, films, operas and shows of every kind. Some people, however, think that this is where the danger lies. The television viewers need do nothing. He does not even have to use his legs if he has a remote control. He makes no choice, does no exercises, and makes no judgment.
He is completely passive （被动的）and has everything presented to him without any effort in his part. Television, it is often said, keeps one informed about current events and the latest developments in science and politics. The most distant countries and the strangest customs are brought right into one’s sitting room. It could be argued that the radio performs this service as well; but on television everything is much more living, much more real. Yet here again there is a danger. The television screen itself has a terrible, almost physical charm for us. We get so used to looking at the movements on it, so dependent on its pictures, that it begins to control our lives. People are often heard to say that their television sets have broken down and that they have suddenly found that they have far more time to do things and that they actually begin to talk to each other again. It makes one think, doesn’t it? There are many other arguments for and against television. We must realize that television itself is neither good nor bad. It is the uses that determine its value to society. 46. The main function of paragraph 1 is to __________. A. introduce the theme of the whole passage B. summarize the whole passage C. arouse the reader’s interest D. state the primary uses of TV 47. Television, as a source of entertainment, is __________. A. not very convenient B. very expensive C. quite dangerous D. relatively cheap 48. Some people are against TV because ___________. A. TV programs are not interesting. B. TV viewers are totally passive. C. TV has more disadvantages. D. TV prices are very high. 49. One of the most obvious advantages of TV is that _______. A. it is very cheap B. it controls our lives C. it keeps us informed D. it enables us to have a rest 50. According to the passage, whether TV is good or not depends on ___________. A. where we buy it B. how we think about it C. how we use it D. where we use it B Last year more than 13 Korean TV series were introduced in China. Turn on the TV, and Korean beauties are appearing during peak viewing times(黄金时段). Some of the dramas are being repeated, but audiences continue to watch them. Why are the South Korean TV series loved by so many Chinese people? Cheng Yiting, a student from East China Normal University, gives us her reasons. She thinks that the good-looking actors with cool clothes and the beautiful sight in the dramas are the selling points for South Korean TV dramas. But what attracted the young audiences most is the pure and moving love stories. And it seems that South Korean TV series have also won the hearts of middle-aged people. They are touched by the morals in the shows. These include the importance of respecting elders and social order. Though some people think South Korean TV series are too slow and too long, most of the Chinese audiences like them. Maybe we are really tired of Western TV series.
Compared with that, South Korean TV series are not bad. 51．What does the underlined word "morals" mean? A．志向 B．情节 C．道德 D．垃圾 52．Which of the following is not mentioned about South Korean TV? A．Love B．Morals C．Social order D．Self-respect 53．What is the most important reason why South Korean TV series are popular with the young audiences? A．The series are slow and long. B．The actors wear cool clothes. C．The stories are pure and moving. D．The actors are good-looking. 54．What do you know about South Korean TV series from the passage? A．Thirteen more South Korean TV series will be introduced to China. B．Young audiences like South Korean TV series better than middle aged people. C．All the South Korean TV series will be repeated this year. D．Some Chinese think part of South Korean TV series are worth watching twice. 55．What does the writer want to tell us? A．We are tired of South Korean TV series. B．South Korean TV series are a great success and popular in China. C．South Korean TV series are better than Chinese TV series. D．We can learn a lot from Korean TV series so we need to watch them again and again. C In England three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop. They studied the information on the post sign and decided which bus to take. About five minutes later the bus they wanted came along. They prepared to get on. Suddenly people rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted insulting remarks about the foreigners. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus so that the first person who arrived at a bus-stop is the first person to get on the bus. Learning the language of a country isn’t enough. If you want to ensure a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your hosts. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, You might see a man apparently shaking his head at another and assume (认为) that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India a rotating (旋转) movement of the head is a gesture that express agreement or acceptance. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to express “yes” — a nod means “no”. In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting, talking to someone, even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause offence (冒犯). It is considered too informal an attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand avoid touching the head of an adult — it’s just not done. Attitudes to women vary considerably around the world. In Japan, for example, it is quite usual for men to plan evening entertainments for themselves and leave their wives at home. Knowing about customs and attitudes is useful when you are travelling, but you also need to know the language used to express different degrees of formality (礼节).
56. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed because ________. A. they didn’t know the English language B. the bus conductor told them to jump the queue C. they didn’t know the custom of lining up for a bus D. they thought they were looked down upon 57. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “insulting” in Para. 1? A. Modest. B. Entertaining. C. Misunderstanding. D. Rude. 58. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage? A. In Europe, using the left hand is considered less respected. B. In India, the left hand is not used as a sign of respect to others. C. In Thailand, you’d better cross your legs when sitting or talking. D. In Japan, it is considered bad manners to touch the head of an adult. 59. The underlined sentence “Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty” means in Bulgaria _______. A. you are probably thirsty if you nod your head B. you’re possibly eager to have a drink if you nod your head C. you probably refuse to drink when you nod your head D. you’d like to have a cup of tea because you nod your head 60. We can infer from the passage that _________. A. in Asian countries, women are equal to men in every field B. learning a language well is a necessity before going abroad C. attitudes to women vary from country to country D. in Japan, men are still the centre of the family D The huge explosion at Krakatau was the result of two different factors. One was that the volcano(火山) had not broken out for some time and so at the very center of the volcano there was a huge plug of lava(熔岩), which acted like a cork(塞子) in a bottle, stopping the pressure below from being released(释放). The second factor was that ocean water entered the very centre of the volcano as the explosions became more violent. This caused superheated steam to build up enormous pressure and this was finally released in the largest explosion of all on August 27, 1883. The sudden release of the pressure sent huge amounts of ash, rock and dust into the sky. Some of the ash rose 80km into the air and traveled around the Earth causing brightly coloured sunsets for several years. Krakatau almost disappeared; for many years after this explosion, it remained very quiet. However, there was still activity going on under the sea and on 25 January, 1925, a small volcanic cone(园锥形物) appeared above the surface of the water. This new volcano was named Anak Kmkatau, or Child of Krakatau. Over the following years, the size of the island grew larger, by 1959, the island was 300 metres above the surface of the sea. The volcanic activity has continued and the latest eruptions were in 1995. There is no doubt Krakatau will continue to grow and there is also strong evidence that at some point in the future there will be another violent explosion. Krakatau is in a part of the world where the surface of the Earth is unstable and is always moving and cracking. If, in the future, another “cork” becomes fixed in the centre of the volcano, the pressure will build up. A series of a smaller explosions will allow sea-water into the centre of the volcano and once again the result
will be a terribly destructive explosion. 61. The latest eruptions were in_______. A.1925 B. 1959 C. 1995 D. 1983 62. The pressure under the volcano can not be released because _______. A. the plug looks like a cork in a bottle B. the volcano hasn’t broken out for some time C. the center of the volcano is blocked by lava D. the temperature of the steam is not high enough. 63. We can infer from the article that Krakatau volcano________. A. has broken out three times B. never dies but continues to be active C. will kill many people again in the future D. is always moving and growing above sea. 64. All of the following results are caused by the explosion at Krakatau EXCEPT that_____. A. ash, rock and dust was thrown high into the air B. other small volcanoes were soon produced. C. the island of Krakatau was destroyed D. people saw beautiful sunsets for some years 65. The article is mainly about________. A. the cause of the Krakatau volcano B. the danger of the Krakatau volcano C. the history of the Krakatau volcano D. the future of the Krakatau volcano A Restaurant Supervisor Waiting Staff The ideal candidates must have relevant experiences gained in a high quality hotel. According to Professor Li, it is very important to stay calm when an earthquake happens. If we are in a building, we must try to cut off electricity and gas, and then stay in a place with little space, such as staying in the toilet, under a desk or a bed. After the earthquake, we should leave the dangerous area immediately in case of strong aftershocks.
