But something made David 4 . I can still remember he was always 5 a smile and willing to help. He always 6 after school to help with the cleaning. We never talked much. He would just smile and ask what else he could do, then thank me for letting him stay and slowly 7 home. Weeks passed and the excitement over the coming Christmas grew into restlessness until the last day of 8 before the holiday break. I smiled in relief as the last of them hurried out the door. Turning around, I saw David 9 standing by my desk. “I have something for you” he said and 10 from behind his back a small box. Handing it to me, he said anxiously. “Open it”. I took the box from him, thanked him and slowly upwrapped it. I lifted the lid and, to my 11 , saw nothing. I looked at David’s smiling face and back into the box and said. “The box is nice, David, but it’s 12 ”. “Oh, no. It isn’t” said David, “It’s full of love. My mum told me before she died that love was something you couldn’t see or touch unless you know it’ s there”. Tears filled my eyes as I looked at the 13 dirty face that I had seldom given 14 to. Neither parent knew that I had called the other. Tommy, an only child, had always been happy, cooperative and an excellent student. How could I convince his father and mother that his recent failing grades represented a broken-hearted child's reaction to his parents' separation and coming divorce? Tommy's mother entered and took one of the chairs. Soon the father arrived. Good! At least they were concerned enough to be here in time. They ignored each other. As I gave a detailed account of Tommy's behavior and schoolwork, I prayed for the right words to bring these two together to help them see what they were doing
to their son. But somehow the words wouldn't come. Perhaps if they saw one of his dirty, carelessly done papers? I found a sheet in the back of his desk. Writing covered both sides: not the assignment, but a single sentence scribbled (潦草地写) over and over. Silently I gave it to Tommy's mother. She read it and then handed it to her husband. Then his face softened. At last he folded the paper carefully, placed it in his pocket, and reached for his wife's hand. She wiped the tears from her eyes and smiled up at him. He helped her with her coat and they left together. In his own way God had given me the words to reunite that family. He had guided me to the sheet of yellow copy paper covered with the pain outpouring of a small boy's troubled heart. The words are "Dear Mom...Dear Daddy... I love you ..." 26. A good teacher B A team of US psychologists have found that talking to another person for ten minutes a day helps with memory. "Socializing is just as effective as more traditional kinds of mental exercise in boosting memory and intellectual performance," Oscar Ybarra, a psychologist at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, said in a statement. In one investigation, they analyzed data on 3610 people, aged 24 to 96. They found that the higher their level of social interaction (交流), the better their cognitive ( 认 知 的 ) functioning. Social interaction includes getting together or having phone chats with relatives, freinds and neighbors. In another experiment, the researchers conducted lab tests on 76 college students, aged 18 to 21, to evaluate how social interactions and intellectual exercises affected the results of memory and mental performance tests. The students were divided into three groups: the social interaction group had a discussion of a social issue for 10 minutes before taking the tests; the intellectual activities group completed three tasks (including a reading comprehension exercise and a crossword puzzle) before the tests; and a control group (对照组) watched a 10-minute clip (电源片段) of the Seinfeld television show.
"We found that short-term social interaction lasting for just 10 minutes improved participants' intellectual performance as much as engaging in so-called 'intellectual' activities for the same amount of time," Ybarra said. The study was expected to be published in the February issue of the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. 31. The underlined word "boosting" in the second paragraph can be replaced by ______. A. improving B. decreasing C. preventing D. training 32. Which is not included in social interaction? A. Having a talk with a neighbor. B. Attending a birthday party. C. Watching TV at home alone. D. Calling your classmates 33. What's the purpose of the experiment on 76 college students? A. To judge the effect of social interaction on memory and intelligence. B. To find out what is real social interaction. C. To learn how much time is needed for social interaction. D. To show the function of people's cognition. 34. Which of the following questions may be asked in the social interaction group in the experiment? A. What does the author want to show us? B. Do you like living in a big city or a small one? C. Which word can be used to fill in the blank? D. What is the main idea of the second paragraph? 35. What's the main idea of the passage? A. Intellectual exercises improve memory. B. Different people have different ways of communication C. Communicating with others keeps you healthy. D. Social interaction makes you smart C When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate? Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel do more harm in the long-term. They will also experience fear. Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they associate you with his emotion of fear, they will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadship. The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they become fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation. Today’ s work place is all about relationships. Anyone works harder in a positive environment in which they are recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the pay check is not the single most motivating factor in the work life of most people. The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the
confidence of emotional intelligence------knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills. 36. An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when ________. A. he is forced to do things B. he can’t work at his best C. he feels his brain shut down D. he thinks of his work too heavy 37. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. People tend to associate leadership with fear. B. Working conditions affect people’s physical health. C. Good relationship is the key to business success. D. Smart people are more functional in the work place. 38. To positively influence employees, a leader should first of all ______. A. provide better suggestions B. develop his own personality C. give his employees a pay rise D. hide his own emotion of fear 39. Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to ______. A. provide a variety of projects for employees B. help raise employees ’ living conditions C. give employees special instructions D. deal wisely with employees’ emotions 40. This passage is mainly about ______ A. not forcing others to do things B. how to develop your emotional intelligence C. how to be a good leader D. how to influence people D Advertising in America offers some great advantages to consumers. For example, in order to keep prices low through mass production, companies must have a mass market for their products. Mass advertising creates mass markets. Producers cannot afford to develop new products, put them on the market and wait for customers to discover them. This would take too long. Demand for some products must be created. This is done through advertising. But advertising sometimes makes it difficult for consumers to make wise decisions. The fact is that when people are constantly flooded with massages through the mass media persuading them to buy particular products, many respond by buying them. Advertising is designed to influence an individual to buy a product. Sellers often study human behavior to discover what will convince consumers to buy a certain item. This reason for buying is called a buying motive. Buying motives are usually broken down into two categories: rational and emotional. Rational buying motives include the desire to save money, the desire for comfort, or the desire for good workmanship. Emotional buying motives include buying out of fear, wanting to liked, and wanting to have something better than your friends have. Emotional appeals are found in most consumer advertising today. Certain cars promise to make the driver feel "younger" and "freer". Shoes promise to make the buyer's whole life "springier". Life insurance policies promise to take the "care out of living". Most consumers believe that they are not easily influenced by emotional appeals. However, companies that sell consumer product obviously think differently. They
spend many millions of dollars every day on radio, television, newspaper and magazine ads that use these appeals. 41. It can be inferred from the passage that one of the advantages of advertising for consumers is that _______. A. it can create a big demand for consumer goods B. the mass market created by it leads to low prices C. producers can introduce new products to consumers D. it helps consumers discover new products 42. Consumers sometimes find it difficult to make a sensible decision when buying a particular product because _________. A. many advertisements are too difficult for them to understand B. they are afraid to be taken in by dishonest advertisements C. mass advertising offers them a range of good and cheap products D. they are confused by the quantity of advertisements promoting it 43. According to the passage, a toothpaste ad promising that people who use the product will make a lot of friends is an example of an ad that appeals to ________. A. rational buying motives B. the consumer's common sense C. emotional buying motives D. the desire for a good product 44. The reason why companies spend enormous amounts of money on advertising is that _______. A. they believe people can be influenced to buy a certain product B. it takes a lot of advertising to convince people to buy a certain product C. most consumers are not easily influenced by emotional appeals D. advertising based on emotional appeals are every effective 45. The best title for this passage would be ________. A. Advertising can create demand B. The advantages of advertising C. What effective advertising can do D. Dear Ms Jordan, I am sorry for misbehaving in class. I won’t do it again. Tyler Vincent Turner
This is a letter of apology that my six-year-old son Tyler wrote to his teacher. It was simple enough and took less than five minutes to write, but I hoped the message I was sending to Tyler was one that would have a lasting effect. When I made the decision, I hoped it was the right thing to do. It turned out that Ms Jordan was thrilled when she received the note. She told me that in her 25 years as a teacher no student had ever written her a letter of apology for misbehavior. She literally looked like she was going to cry. I want him to realize that he is responsible for his behavior, good or otherwise. That’s why I decided to make him write the letter of apology. I didn’t tell him what to write------the words were his own. And he did so without any unwillingness and gave it to his teacher this morning with an oral apology. If it happens again, he’ll have to write another letter. Taking responsibility for your own actions should start as young as possible and a six-year-old boy is certainly old enough.
