Students in class are usually looking forward to the break. However, they are expecting different things. Some students want to make use of that period of time hanging out with their classmates. They enjoy fun by chatting, playing games, or doing some outdoor activities. Others want to spend the break reading, doing homework, or reviewing lessons. In a word, nowadays, school breaks could be either “academic” or “physical”, which is a very interesting phenomenon. As a high school student, I favor the “physical” way of break. I find it very hard when I have too much work to finish, though. I have to deal with my homework during the break. I don’t deny some students are really book worms, absorbing knowledge every minute. However, I dare say the majority of us students know what we really want and what we really need to do. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We are struggling for a balance between work and play. 听力录音稿 Text 1 W: Let’s have the meeting at ten past nine. M: Oh, I’m out of the office until ten thirty. W: Well, I have a team activity at eleven. How about tomorrow at ten past nine? M: Fine. Text 2 W: I hear you’re leaving. M: Yeah. I am moving to Cambridge. I’ve gotten a job offer there. Besides, my parents live there. Text 3 W: The university bus has broken down, so I don’t know how I can get to work on time tomorrow morning. M: Would you like me to pick you up? Text 4 W: These sofas are nice, but I need a strong one. You see, I have four children, two dogs and a cat. M: I have just the thing for you. W: That’s not a bad-looking sofa. Text 5 M: I hope there weren’t too many calls while I was away yesterday. W: There wasn’t a single one, Mr. Lee. The phone was out of order all day. Text 6 W: Excuse me, are you the manager of this store? M: Yes, I am. How can I help you? W: I just wanted to let you know that one of your employees, Anne, is especially helpful. She goes out of her way to answer questions and help people find things. I wanted to mention it to someone so that she might get some recognition for her great service. M: Well, thanks a lot. I’ll make sure what you said just now was written down, and that the store owner hears about it. Text 7 M: Why are you feeling so sick? W: What did you put in the soup? M: Tomatoes, potatoes, and green vegetables. W: No, I mean spices. M: Salt and sugar. Oh, and some pepper. Why? W: It tastes like washing powder. M: Are you serious? Let me have a taste. W: Well? M: Oh, my God! What went wrong? I did everything as usual. W: Maybe it’s the pepper. You have never used pepper before. M: Good point. I used some white pepper. W: No, you silly. That’s the washing powder. I put it there to remind myself to clean the kitchen floor later. M: What? My God! Text 8
M: You are back. Here’s a package. And I think it belongs to you. W: Let me see... What’s this language? M: Not English anyway. Just open it. There may be a surprise waiting for you. W: Alright. M: Wow! What’s this? W: Oh, now I remember. This is a package from a Dutch friend of mine I met on the Internet. It’s chocolate! M: Oh, I’ve got the picture here. So this is basically Dutch chocolate? What’s so special? W: It’s actually more special than you think. Go get two glasses of milk. M: Alright, here you are. W: We can put the chocolate in the milk and stir with a spoon. Here you are, hot chocolate. M: Impressive. Text 9 M: Katie, what was the worst meal you have ever eaten? W: Oh, it has to be this plate of chicken. M: What? Are you serious? W: Ha ha, no, I’m just kidding. This restaurant is awesome. Let me think... It was the meal that my dad and I had when we were on vacation last summer. M: So what was it? W: Well, we were in Hawaii, and all the restaurants were super expensive, so we went to a little place far from the beach. M: Let me guess, the fish wasn’t fresh. W: No, it was totally rotten! My dad and I both got sick when we went back to the hotel. I haven’t eaten in many restaurants since then. That experience really affected me. M: Well, if it makes you feel any better, I couldn’t eat French fries for quite a long time. W: Why not? M: Once I had a pretty disgusting experience in a fast food restaurant. Let’s just say the place had a bit of a fly problem, and one of the cooks must have forgotten to check the potatoes. W: Oh, no! French flies! Text 10 Today we will look at our three new products. The first is the “Kitchen Friend”, a vegetable slicer and juice machine. It comes in six colors and performs a variety of common kitchen functions. Actually, it is the newest type. We think this will be popular in most families. The next new product is the “Mini Steamer”. It can steam out the toughest clothing wrinkles. The best part is that it folds completely flat and can fit in a suitcase. We think it will be a hit with travelers. The final product is the “Calm Case”. It comes in different sizes to fit everything from portable music players to laptop computers. We think this will be especially popular with sports lovers. Take a moment to examine these samples and then we’ll discuss possible marketing approaches for each one. We need to come up with some effective strategies that will appeal to each different market, but with a fresh, modern approach.
