A
In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years

later, I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic -- and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo -- a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not special, just single-minded. It always strikes me that when you're looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you're in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won't arrive in your life on one day. It's a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams. 46. When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be ________. A. a writer B. a teacher C. a judge D. a doctor 47. Why did the author quit school in her second year of college? A. She wanted to study by herself. B. She fell in love and got married. C. She suffered from a serious illness. D. She decided to look after her grandma. 48. What can we learn about the author from Paragra phs 4 and 5? A. She was busy yet happy with her family life. B. She ignored her guilty feeling for her sons. C. She wanted to remain a full-time housewife. D. She was too confused to make a correct choice. 49. What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph? A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Little by little, one goes far. C. Every coin has two sides. D. Well begun, half done. 50. Which of the following can best describe the author? A. Caring and determined. B. Honest and responsible. C. Ambitious and sensitive. D. Innocent and single-minded.

Welcome to your future life You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is firm and young-looking. In 2035, medical technology is better than ever. Many people your age could live to be 150, so at 40, you’re not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging(抗衰老的) treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age! programmed to change clothes’ color or pattern. You walk into the kitchen. In 2035, every article of food in the grocery store has such a chip. It’s time to go to work. In 2035, cars drive themselves. Just tell your ―smart car‖ where to go. On the way, you can call a friend using your jacket sleeve. Such ―smart technology‖ is all around you. So will all these things come true? ―For new technology to succeed,‖ says scientist Andrew Zolli,‖it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.‖ The Internet is one example—what will be the next? 51. Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller's father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, drawn like so many others by the "Great American Dream". However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early 1930s. Miller's most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive(进攻性的,侵略性的)way of doing business and its insistence (坚持,强调) on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with this system. Willy is "burnt out" and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment(感伤): if he can't do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end. When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.

Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on the evening of February 10, 2005, the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway. 56. Why did Arthur Miller's father move to the USA? A. He suffered from severe hunger in his home country. B. He was attracted by the "Great American Dream" C. He hoped to make his son a dramatist. D. His family business failed. 57. The play Death of a Salesman ________. A. exposes the cruelty of the American business world B. discusses the ways to get promoted in a company C. talks about the business career of Arthur Miller D. focuses on the skills in doing business 58. What can we learn about Willy Loman? A. He treats his employer badly. B. He runs the Wagner Company. C. He is a victim of the American system. D. He is regarded as a hero by his colleagues. 59. After it was first staged, Death of a Salesman ________. A. achieved huge success B. won the first Tony Award C. was warmly welcomed by salesmen D. was severely attacked by dramatists 60. What is the text mainly about? A. Arthur Miller and his family B. The awards Arthur Miller won C. The hardship Arthur Miller experienced D. Arthur Miller and his best-known play

D
In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity(繁荣), others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship betwe en people. I have taught many children who held the belief that their self–worth relied (依赖) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life –and–death affairs. In their single–minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: ―I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I r eally didn’t try.‖ What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of

their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self–respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begin s to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition. 61. What does this passage mainly talk about? A. Competition helps to set up self–respect. B. Opinions about competition are different among people. C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development. D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition 62. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage? A. It pushes society forward. B. It builds up a sense of duty. C. It improves personal abilities. D. It encourages individual efforts. 63.The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means________________ . A .those who try their best to win B. those who value competition most highly C .those who are against competition most strongly D. those who rely on others most for success 64. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail? A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others. B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts. C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills. D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried. 65. Which point of view may the author agree to? A. Every effort should be paid back. B. Competition should be encouraged. C. Winning should be a life –and-death matter. D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
