What is translation aesthetics all about?

? Aesthetics:The term aesthetics derives from the Greek,which means perception. The derivative modern meanings of beauty,taste, and artistic criteria arose in the 18th century. Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of art, beauty, and taste, with the creation and appreciation of beauty

2.Translation Aesthetics
Actually,in early western translation theories,the glimmer of aesthetics has appeared. ? Cicero:what the general style and force of the language cares is type of writing and infectious language.(The Best Kind of Orator) ? Horace:producing an aesthetically pleasing and creative text in TL.(Ars Poetica) ? Tytler:the translation should have all the ease of original composition.

? Translation aesthetics was proposed by Zhu Guangqian at the beginning of 1980s. Since the conception of aesthetics was introduced into China by Wang Guowei,the development of translation theory in China has structurally changed.
– Yan Fu:xin(fidelity,faithfulness),da(influency,comprehe nsibility),ya(elegance,polish) – Fu Lei:be alike in spirit rather than in form(神似大于形似) – Lin Yutang:fistly related aesthetics to translation theory

3.What is translation all about
? The British translation theorist A.F.Tytler came up with the three principles of translation:
1. That the translation should give a complete transcript of the ideas of the original work. 2. That the style and manner of writing should be of the same character with that of the original. 3. That the translation should have all the ease of original composition.

? So according to this, I think translation aesthetics should focus on the following aspects.

? Explore the beauty of language
Liu Miqing sees this as a basic mission of translation aesthetics.This is the most important principle in translation aesthetics,for no matter what kind of work,especially literary work,need exact expression and elegant style. Sigh no more,ladies,sigh no more, Men were deceivers ever; One foot in sea,and one on shore, To one thing constant never. (Shakespeare,Much Ado About Nothing)

? Establish criteria for different types of work
Present studies on translation aesthetics are centered on the mocro-level.We can move on to the micro-level and set criteria for different types of writing,such as poetry,prose,technical essays etc.,in order to give some directions in translation practice.

? To deal with inensxplicit characteristics
Translators usually focus on the level of word, sound, sentence and text in representing the original text.There is always lack of attention in some deeper beauty such as artistic conception.style,rhyme and emotion.Because of all kinds of difference between tow languages,this problem is the toughest one to deal with.

? Reader's response and acceptance
Reader's acceptance ,response and aesthetic experience also affect the translation's aesthetic condition.Translation aesthetics should pay some attention to study the dynamic process between writer,reader and work.
