But its wonders sounded so incredible that they were forever burned in his memory. From that moment, he never stopped searching for clues which might lead him to the island. He read hundreds of adventure books, histories, volumes of physics and chemistry, even music. Over time, he pieced together his idea of what the Island of Inventions was like. It was a secret place, where all the great wise men of the world would meet to learn and invent together. Access to the island was totally restricted. To join, you had to have created some great invention for humanity. Only then could you receive the special invitation — which came with directions to the

island. So Luca spent his youth studying and inventing. Every new idea he got, he made it into an invention, and if there were something he didn't understand, he’d seek others to help him. Soon he met other young inventors and he told them about the Island of Inventions. They too dreamed of one day receiving an invitation letter. As years passed, the disappointment of not receiving their invitation made Luca and his friends work harder and co-operate more. They would meet in Luca's house, share their ideas and build new machines. Their inventions became known throughout the world, and improved the lives of millions. But still, no invitation came. They didn’t lose heart. They continued learning and inventing every day, trying to come up with more and better ideas. Fresh young talent joined their group, as more inventors dreamed of getting to the island. One day many years later, Luca, already very old, was speaking with a brilliant young man named Roberts, who had written to him, asking him to join the group. Luca started telling the man of the wonderful Island of Inventions, and of how he was sure that some day they would receive an invitation. Surprised, the young inventor interrupted: ―You mean this place isn’t the Island of Inventions? Isn't the letter you sent me the real invitation?‖ It was only then that Luca realised that his dream had become true in his very own house. No island could exist which would be better than where he was now. No place of invention would be better than what he and his friends had created. Luca felt happy to know that he had always been on the island, and that his life of invention and study had been a truly happy one. 26. Luca’s picture of the Island of Inventions was mainly based on ________. A. scientific research B. his imagination C. reports of others D. history books 27. Why did Luca and his colleagues probably never receive an invitation to the island? A. Their ideas were not considered worthy enough. B. They were too concerned with acquiring fame. C. The organization had already broken up. D. The island was not a real place. 28. What was Roberts’ reaction to Luca’s story of the island? A. He thought he had already arrived at the island. B. He was disappointed to discover it didn’t exist. C. He was excited about receiving an invitation. D. He expressed surprise that Luca believed in such fairy tales. 29. What did Luca learn at the end of the story? A. The island of inventions did not exist. B. He had wasted most of his life. C. He had unknowingly built his own dreamland. D. He finally would receive his invitation. 30. Which of the following best describes Luca? A. Aggressive. B. Trusting. C. Creative. D. Easy-going.

B Imagine putting a seed in a freezer, waiting 30,000 years, and then taking the seed out and planting it. Do you think a flower would grow? Amazingly, scientists have just managed to do something very similar. They found the fruit of an ancient plant that had been frozen underground in Siberia — a region covering central and eastern Russia — for about 31,800 years. Using pieces of the fruit, the scientists grew plants in a lab. The new blooms have delicate white petals. They are also the oldest flowering plants that researchers have ever revived from a deep freeze. ―This is like regenerating a dinosaur from tissues of an ancient egg,‖ said University of California, Los Angeles biologist Jane Shen-Miller. The plant has a long history. Back when mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses walked the land, an Arctic ground squirrel buried seeds and fruits in an underground chamber near the Kolyma River in northeastern Siberia. The ground became permafrost, a layer of soil that stays frozen for a long time. Recently, Russian scientists dug out the old squirrel hole and found the plant remains 38 meters below the surface. Back at the lab, the team fed nutrients to tissue from three of the fruits to grow shoots. Then the scientists transferred the shoots to pots filled with soil. The plants produced seeds that could be used to grow even more of them. It’s important for scientists to know that plant tissues can still be revived after being frozen for a long time. That’s because many researchers are trying to preserve the seeds of modern plants by freezing them and then storing them in giant lockers at various spots around the globe. One such endeavor, an underground facility in Norway, is called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It stores hundreds of thousands of frozen seeds. If a plant ever goes extinct, scientists could bring it back by taking its seeds from the Svalbard or other storage lockers. ―No one knows how long they are able to live for, but freezing is basically the format for many plant conservation attempts nowadays.‖ Shen-Miller said. It’s a good thing that at least some plants are tough en ough to survive the experience. 31. How did the fruit originally get underground? A. It was placed there by an animal. B. It was trapped there during the ice-age. C. It was planted there by ancient farmers. D. It was buried there after the earthquake. 32. Which of the following was NOT used to recreate the ancient plant? A. Modern nutrients. B. Parts of its fruit. C. Its frozen seeds. D. Plant pots with soil. 33. Why are scientists interested in this discovery? A. It helps them learn how plant life has changed in the past 30,000 years. B. It can help guide future efforts to protect endangered plant-life. C. It can provide directions for where to look for other ancient plants. D. It proves that all plant life can survive for thousands of years when frozen. 34. The underlined word ―they‖ in the final paragraph refers to _______. A. plants B. seeds C. scientists D. storage lockers 35. The purpose of the passage is to _______. A. discuss a plant conservation effort

B. introduce some ancient plants C. outline some causes of global warming D. describe a scientific research project C As thousands of communities in the USA — especially in the South — became booming gateways for immigrant families from Central and South America during the 1990s and the early years of the new century, public schools struggled with the unfamiliar task of serving the large numbers of English learners arriving in their classrooms. Education programs needed to be built from scratch. ―We had no teaching resources suitable for English learners here before. We had to develop them all ourselves,‖ a Texas principal said. Throughout the country, districts had to train their own teachers to teach English to non-native speakers or recruit teachers from elsewhere. School staff members had to figure out how to communicate with parents who spoke no English. But even as immigration has slowed or stopped in many places, and instructional programs for English-learners have matured, serving immigrant families and their children remains a work in progress in many public schools, especially those in communities that are skeptical, or sometimes unwelcoming, to the newcomers. One of the biggest challenges educators face, is communicating effectively with parents who don’t speak English — an issue that, in part, has contributed to recent complaints of discrimination by Latino students in some cities. ―The parents’ role is very important for the success of these students, but it's also one of the most difficult things we’ve had to tackle,‖ said Jim D. Rollins, the president of the Springdale school district, where the 19,000-student school system has gone from having no English-learners 15 years ago to more than 7,500 now. ―You have to make it a priority and work on it, work on it, and work on it.‖ Aside from the practical challenges, such as finding bilingual (会说两种语言的) staff members, guiding districts through such dramatic changes requires school leaders to bridge difficult political and cultural divides. For school leaders in the South, especially in the last few years, this difficult job has been made harder still by the negative attitudes of some locals towards immigrants. 36. According to the passage, what is the problem that public schools are facing? A. Handling more cases from the immigrant Mexican communities. B. Offering services to immigrant families in the southern states. C. Offering enough communicative lessons to immigrant parents. D. Providing education for non-native English learners. 37. The underlined part ―built from scratch‖ (in Paragraph 2) probably means ―________‖. A. completely new B. painful to make C. based on past experience D. constructed gradually 38. What is one of the things the school leaders have done to deal with the problems? A. Provide more Spanish-only classes. B. Invite more teachers from other places. C. Train their teachers to speak Spanish. D. Use bilingual parents as part-time teachers. 39. What do we know about the immigrant parents?

?

??

A. Many of them cannot speak English. B. Most of them think education is not important. C. Some of them feel skeptical about the local community. D. Few of them have attended American schools. 40. According to Paragraph 3, what has caused some of the recent complaints by Latino students? A. Discrimination by schools. B. Unfriendliness of the locals. C. Miscommunication with parents. D. Poor government service. D Steven Spielberg’s new movie Lincoln paints a vivid and breath-taking picture of the 16th U.S. president and his determination to end slavery. Spielberg based his film on parts of Team of Rivals, a book by Doris Kearns Goodwin. He makes Abraham Lincoln relevant today by presenting a cunning political mind trying to overcome Washington’s all too familiar political divisions. In previous movies, Lincoln was shown as a simple yet almost perfect man. But Spielberg’s Lincoln is different. ―I was determined to make a movie about a working president dealing with real problems. Not some angel,‖ Spielberg said. We watch the president first ending slavery and then the war. The film’s adviser, historian Eric Martin, explains how Lincoln's thinking evolved. ―His main objective when the war began was not the freeing of the slaves but to keep the country united. Lincoln realizes that in order to keep the country together, the question of slavery will have to be addressed,‖ Martin said. The film focuses on the last four months of his presidency. In the movie, the arguments among political enemies seem very similar to the problems we see in Washington today. The disagreements were bitter. The film turns to Lincoln’s relationships with his wife and kids, his beliefs and constant self-examination. Daniel Day-Lewis, the actor who plays Lincoln, offers an Oscar-worthy performance as the 16th President. Not only is his physical similarity to the president incredible, he is able to capture many of Lincoln’s mannerisms and his high-pitched, almost lady-like voice. ―I found it very easy to play the role of Lincoln because the real man himself was so open. When I was researching his his tory to prepar e for the part, one of the most surprising things I found was just how accessible he was. Even in war-time, when he was in great danger, he was always willing to meet with others and share his ideas,‖ Day-Lewis said. Spielberg’s Lincoln will head to the Oscars. But more important it will make history. 41. What does Spielberg say is different about his movie of Lincoln? A. It is based on a book called ―Team of Rivals‖. B. It mainly shows how cunning Lincoln was. C. It focuses on how he worked as a politician. D. It describes how determined he was. 42. According to Martin, Abraham Lincoln ______. A. started the war to free the slaves B. ended slavery to keep the country united

The so-called ―boy crisis (危机)‖ in education refers to both their academic performance and their behaviour. In both areas boys’ results are much worse than girls’. USA data shows that boys rank behind girls in almost all areas of schooling. They earn lower grades overall in primary school and high school. They are behind girls in reading and writing, and 30 percent of them are in the bottom quarter of standardized tests, compared with 19 percent of girls. Boys are also more likely to have behavioural problems, to repeat a grade and to drop out of school altogether. Studies in China have found similar trends. Although the causes of the ―boy crisis‖ are not fully understood, some experts believe that same-sex (boys-only and girls-only) classrooms and schools may help solve the problem. The idea is to remove some of the distractions caused by the opposite sex, in order to improve students’ concentration and hopefully their grades. The first Chinese school to experiment with this idea is the Shanghai No. 8 Middle School, which began ―boys-only‖ classes in September, 2012. Although it is too early to tell if the reform has made a difference, its supporters argue that the results are promising.

I’m very much honored to give you a speech on healthy breakfast. Some students in our class often go to school without breakfast while others do have breakfast but not a well-balanced one. Consequently, their health and study efficiency are negatively affected. A healthy and well-balanced breakfast should consist of whole grains, eggs and milk, fruits and vegetables. The grain which contains carbohydrates can provide the energy we need every day. Eggs and milk supply protein and fruits and vegetables are good for healthy digestion. Therefore, I strongly suggest that we should get up early and have a well-balanced breakfast before going to school.

读写任务:

The passage shows that nowadays boys tend to perform worse than girls in all aspects in school, which is known as the “boy crisis”. Experts suggest that same-sex schooling may be a possible solution to the problem.

?

From my perspective, the merits of single sex education are as follows. Firstly, kids feel more comfortable being themselves in this environment. Secondly, it is easier for teachers to design learning tasks because boys and girls process information differently. When it comes to its disadvantages, the lack of socialization is my primary concern. If kids lack the opportunity to communicate with the opposite sex, their psychological development and their communication skills may be harmed. As for me, I'm opposed to the same-sex education. One reason is because it's not practical to be carried out on a large scale at present. Moreover, same-sex schools could encourage inequality and unfairness between boys and girls. But most importantly, if kids can encounter the opposite sex, they will have more appreciation, understanding and sympathy for others. This will help them be more mature and open-minded and contribute to their well-being in later life.
