告别了往昔的喧嚣繁华，日渐寥落的矿工小镇冷石镇迎来了最为悲凉恐怖的时刻。在相当长的一段时期，镇上的小孩接连失踪，人们相信是一个神形高大宛如恶魔般的男人带走孩子。儿童失踪案震惊全国，也让冷石镇的居民们提心吊胆，惶惶不可终日。早年丧夫的小镇护士茱莉娅·丹宁（杰西卡·贝尔 Jessica Biel 饰）似乎不太相信高个男人的传说，对她来说，与儿子戴维（雅可布?戴维斯 Jakob Davies 饰）相处便是幸福的全部。在某个刚刚被暴雨洗礼的夜晚，酒后微醉的茱莉娅突然发现家中有人侵入，儿子戴维更是不知去向。她惶恐地追了出去，见到一辆车正准备逃跑，茱莉娅不顾一切奔跑上前。
