作为一名来日本念书的美国学生，嘉云（莎拉·米歇尔·盖拉 Sarah Michelle Gellar 饰）一直过着半工半读的生活。这一次，她接受了一份看护患了僵直症的老人艾玛（Grace Zabriskie 饰）的工作。艾玛独自居住在一间大宅里，这里的破败和荒芜充分显示了它和老人被时间遗忘的痕迹，而对于艾玛诡异的行为举止，嘉云也仅仅觉得是她的神经出了问题罢了。 随着时间的推移，嘉云感到似乎有某些极为可怕的东西藏在这所房子的阴影中。无人的楼梯上传来声响，长相怪异的男孩忽闪忽现，所有的迹象都指向一点——在这所古老的房子里，她是那个不受欢迎的人。身边的人连遭厄运，这里究竟发生过怎样的故事才导致了如今的咒怨作祟？嘉云决心调查到底。
